What?

Pencil Boxes

Who?

Me, with help from Cody on the CNC machine (and some tips from Tyler on getting my design onto the machine)

So what's the point?

I wanted to make boxes for 2 of the pencils that I made as presents.

What did I end up creating?

Just what I wanted to make: 2 boxes that fit the pencils I made perfectly!

What was my role?

I engineered the project. So, I designed the pencil boxes, made them, and all that other good stuff. I'll go into detail in a sec.

What role did CAD play in the project?

I designed the boxes on Pro Desktop. Then I turned it into g-code and put it into the CNC machine.

Where did the design process come in?

Define the Problem - I wanted to make 2 boxes that fit 2 of the pencils I made.

Research The Problem - Mr. Conners found some ideas and I found some ideas about how to make the pencil boxes and how to close them, etc.

Develop Possible Solutions - We decided that the best way to make the boxes would be on the mill wizard or with the router.

Choose the Best Solution - We decided to make the boxes with the mill wizard, so I spent a while learning to use the CNC machine. My documentation is at MillWizardDocumentation.

Create a Prototype - I finally got it!!! I figured out how to use the mill wizard and I changed my Pro Desktop design to g-code and made it in a smaller size in foam.

Test and Evaluate - I made it in the right size in wood, but after 2 hours, it was only about 50% done with one half of the box. So, with about 2 days left before Christmas vacation began, I had to choose a different route.

Communicate - Mr. Conners and I talked, and we decided to make it on the router. Mr. Conners made a backstop for it so we could easily make the boxes or anything else like that.

Redesign - No redesigning needed! The design I had worked awesome!!

P.S. Hard copies of the drawings for the boxes are in my portfolio!
